How to Care for Handloom Sarees and Natural Dye Clothing
Handloom sarees and naturally dyed garments deserve gentle care. Good washing, drying and storage habits can help preserve the fabric's texture, shape and colour while extending the life of your favourite pieces.
1. Wash Gently
Use cold water and a mild liquid or pH-neutral detergent. Avoid harsh detergents and bleach. For delicate handloom and naturally dyed pieces, gentle hand washing is often preferable to a strong machine cycle.
2. Avoid Scrubbing and Wringing
Do not aggressively scrub, twist or wring the fabric. Instead, gently move the garment through the water and press out excess moisture carefully.
3. Expect Some Natural Colour Variation
Naturally dyed textiles can release some excess colour during early washes. This is part of the character of many natural dye processes. Wash dark and light garments separately and follow the specific care instructions supplied with the garment.
4. Dry With Care
Dry delicate textiles away from harsh, prolonged direct sunlight unless the care instructions say otherwise. Avoid leaving wet garments bundled together for long periods.
5. Iron on the Appropriate Setting
Use the temperature recommended for the fibre. When in doubt, iron on the reverse side or place a clean cloth between the iron and the garment.
6. Store Properly
Make sure garments are clean and completely dry before storing. Fold delicate sarees and garments carefully and avoid overcrowding them.
Care Is Part of Slow Fashion
Taking care of handcrafted clothing is one of the simplest ways to practise conscious fashion. A well-cared-for handloom saree or naturally dyed garment can remain part of your wardrobe for years.
